Ruby is now Toad Safe

(******UPDATE NO MORE GENTLE LEADER******

Driving to Peoria on Thursday we put the Gentle Leader on. We had a few corrections, then things got awfully still and awfully quiet. Ruby had rubbed off the head collar, and chewed the offending thing into three pieces.)

Saturday morning, Ruby and I hit the road at 4 AM to attend Toad Safe aversion training in Oracle.

It was a rough morning for Ruby, because, anticipating 90 minutes in the Escape with a potentially berserk dog,
Ruby had to wear her Gentle Leader Head Collar, which she finds very embarassing.
It did however, promote calmer, more controlled behavior in the truck.

Until, having got to Oracle early, we took a drive around and encountered the herd of about 8 javelina.

We got to the training with the Snake Safe people. They were very meticulous about orienting the owners about what the dogs would be put through and what we would encounter. Ruby and I were the only Toad people there.

Toad training is carefully regulated. A snake can be made safe by defanging, but a toad can not survive the removal of his paratoid glands, so even closer attention must be paid to both dog and toad. Toads are collared and on a leash. You can see the toad leaping away just to the right of Ruby's head as she is pouncing.

In mid leap, Ruby got a low zap from the electronic training collar, and was comforted and told she was "bit" by the toad. The toad was brought out of the box, and when Ruby attacked, she got another mild zap.

Then we had a five minute time out, while the toad was relocated out in the field.
Ruby diverted me about five yards to avoid the toad.

We had a couple tests, then we went back to the toad in the enclosed environment.

Ruby went into toadal denial and toadally avoided even acknowledging there was a toad anywhere nearby.
She won't go into the toad side of the yard now after dark.
Of course, I am now finding night poops on the opposite side of the yard.

In a few weeks we will go back for Snake Safe training.
