Read the story about Where Ruby Came From, or "The Dog From The LaundroMat."
When we first got Ruby, Jim had pretty strict ideas about how dogs should exist with family. Dogs stayed outside all the time. Dogs never came in the house. Dogs certainly never slept in the house, and never, ever could sleep in the bedroom. Dogs are working dogs, guard dogs and need to fierce and intolerant of strangers.
Well, Princess Dog, who by the way, helped us over QL's heartbreaking death, has wormed her way into our hearts, and one by one the dog rules have gone by the wayside.
Ruby guarded us in the coach every night, and fended off the javelinas to keep them from eating our prickly pear. She also was exceptional in discovering and alerting us to skunks, usually by barking followed by the presence of a strong odor.
Read about Ruby the Skunk Dog.
Ruby earned the right to be let into the coach first thing every morning, as an effective "puppy alarm," who just couldn't understand why I didn't want to leap up and play with her, and would
WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF
until I got up to play.
Ruby housebroke herself, after depositing a pile in the construction in the front room. Now, since it's too hot to take her with us when we go out during the day, she is the model dog that stays inside and guards the house, barking at anyone who comes to the door.

Maybe it had to do with the heat of the summer, but Ruby much preferred to be an indoor dog, and once we moved down to the house from the coach, Ruby spent more and more time inside, helping with the construction projects. She particularly loves to help Jim with the lower cabinets.
Ruby is also quick to monitor work levels, and if one of us overdoes it, she immediately leaps to the rescue to lick and refresh, such as when we were tiling the kitchen BEFORE we got the AC unit repaired in June.
We haven't been able to stop her licking everybody. It is her special way of greeting friends and loved ones.
We feel we have hit the dog jackpot.
Ruby was not fond of the monsoon season we were in the midst of, during what seemed like all summer...
