I have a Birthday!

The good news is I made it to 50 on November 7th!
The bad news was, my Dad was (and still is) having issuse with two broken teeth,
and I had to head home for a week in November.

The good news was, my family got to celebrate my birthday.

My jouurney started as a negotiation with my Dad, if he got his two teeth extracted, I would come home.
He chickened out, but I already had my ticket so was committed.

I set out at some ridiculously early hour on November 6th, with my friend Rhonda driving me to the airport.
Don't you hate the way they nickle and dime you for bags and stuff now at the airlines, SHEESH!
Just add $100 for bags and food on a round trip.

And thank you God, for letting us discover rolling bags.
And small bags that slide down over the handle of bigger rolling bags.

Mom picked me up and we went home . Chilly and rainy. Wonderful.
Everyone kept apologizing to me for the weather, as if they were responsible.
We Arizonans love cloudly and cool and rainy weather. Helps us appreciate our paradise even more.

I was ready for bed about 6, but when my brother got home,
he informed me that we were going to the Eagles club for a cocktail before I could go to bed,
but he had to do some school work first.

By 11 I was ready to sleep on the carpet in the living room, but at 11:30
John emerged and said he was done with his homework and let's go.

We got to the Eagles Club about ten minutes later. Our friend Royal was bartending, but no one else we knew was there.

After he served us, Royal called, "last call," but told us not to hurry, we could visit after closing.

So, a little before 12 Royal brought us refills on our drinks, and I asked, "well aren't you closing?"
Royal said, "no hurry, you just got into town."

Then at midnight, he announced he had to go check the doors, and suddenly,
his wife Peggy, our friend Marion, and all sorts of our friends rushed in.

They gave me a midnight surprise party!

It was quite delightful. I think a good time was had by all.

Then the next day, John told me my present would be later,
as he got me a signed giclee of Michael Birwarer's "Raymond and University."

People may wonder why I so prize a painting of a Liquor Store,
but all the second floor windows on the left side of the building (the Security Building),
were my Dad's offices for his law practice.

We know Sharrett's very well, and we always try to stop in and say hi to Dana
when we get Mom her Rhine Wine and Dad his reds.

(When in July, after Mom's surgery, Dad worried himself sick. When he was admitted into the VA hospital, the intake nurse was doing the history, and at some point she said, "How about alcohol?" My Dad said, "what?"

The nurse asked, "do you drink alcohol, Mr. Bertie?"

My Dad's definite response was, "oh, yes, as a matter of fact, I'd love a Manhattan right now."

I thought the nurse was going to have a stroke.)

Enjoy this image of my birthday gift from my brother, that he had signed by the artist, and visit Michael Birawer's site!

Check out the Uptown Bar, First Avenue
(where I had my movie debut in "Purple Rain",
you will see my hands or at least the tips of my fingers,
waving in a crowd scene).

Nearly all of his scenes are places near and dear to me from my past,
from Lyle's to W.A. Frost to the Green Mill, to the Polonaise Room.

If I was rich I would have my own Michael Birwarer Gallery in my home.

It was a good birthday visit.

Dad is going to get his teeth done as soon as he gets over the infection and
results of the infect and gets the approval of his primary care doctor. Then I have to go back.
