Tragedy in Niger, Please Pass Along
From: Robert Davis

Subject: Fwd: Disaster in Agadez--URGENT
Dear friend.
Please read carefully the attached message from Leslie Clark in Agadez, Niger. Although this flood occurred several weeks ago, the need for food and rebuilding support is as great now as it was then.
As most of you know, I was privileged to be in Agadez several years ago. with Leslie, to observe and help maintain the lifestyle of the threatened nomads of the area.
Agadez is, in a way, a twin city to the more famous Timbuktu, meaning it is built entirely of mud houses, so a flood of the proportions described below is more devastating than a California earthquake. Additionally, Niger is one of the poorest nations on earth, making Haiti, for example, appear to be practically opulent..
There was no reporting of this local disaster in any of the world press. Indeed we would not know about it at all if it were not for the fact that Leslie Clark happened to be there, and happens to have a satellite operated computer with which she can contact the outside world. Please access both of the nomad foundation url's listed below, and,if you can, please donate something for the relief of these people.
In this case, it truly is, if you don't who will, as no one knows of this tragedy. Also please send to any of your friends that might be willing to contribute. Please note that $30 will buy enough food to feed a family of 6 for one month, and Nomad Foundation is a 501 c 3,
By the way, there is some good news here. When that much water hits the local pasture lands there will be a large amount of vegetation spring up, so in several months and for several months, the livestock will enjoy an unusual bounty.
Many thanks!
Bob Davis

Dear Friends in Rotary.
On Oct. 2 a flash flood ravaged Agadez leaving 7,000 families homeless and without food or shelter. Ten are confirmed dead but many are missing. I am here as you all know trying to open our clinic and the rains have disrupted everything. I, like most of Agadez have been in shock for two days and now I have no choice but to mobilize. The Rotary Club of Agadez is ready to manage assistance if we can get it. I visited the town with Sidi, Boucha our present president and a group of ministers who flew in from Niamey this morning and it is unclear what, if anything they can do.
I know there is a special program in Rotary for emergency shelter in a box. Who do we find out about this from? I also would like everyone to send this link to all club members and friends who might be interested in helping here.
The Red Cross was there, but in the region does not have a reputation for being very efficient. I hope we can do something. I am leaving tomorrow for the bush to install the clinic, but will only be there 2-3 days and will be in touch at this address with my satellite modem.
I am in Agadez now so was able to create the donation page. Any donations to the foundation will be emailed to me and based on this I can get credit immediately from the bank here to give to the Agadez Club to distribute food before people starve. We need help
