I Love Colorado
I have been on many trips to Colorado with my brother, and we especially loved the Cliff Dwellings at Mesa Verde.
Mesa Verde, one of the most beautiful places on earth outside Arizona.

Here I am in Marble, CO.
This is the quarry where the marble for the Lincoln Memorial
and the Washington Monument was obtained.
This is one of the smaller blocks left in this abandoned place.

We love old trains.
The Durango-Silverton (D&SNGRR) Narrow Gauge Railroad
is one cool ride, particularly if you are in the Parlor Car.
We reserved 6 months in advance for the Parlor Car,
as it was filled up the year before.
Here is my brother, John, with Engine 480.

One of the advantages of being in the last car on a long train
is the picture you can get hanging out the window.

Here's an old mine along the road.

Besides the train in Durango,
our fascinations centered around Independence Pass out of Aspen to the East.
One of the highest spots we visited.
This is an "end of September" shot.

But alongside the pass, is the actual Town of Independence.
When we hear the term, "ghost town," we usually think of facades and nice old westy, touristy stuff.
The Ghost Town of Independence has exactly what its name implies:
ghosts of days past.
Skeletons of cabins.
Quite possibly my favorite discovery on the road.
If this old wood could tell stories of the people that lived here,
trapped all winter in 10x10 cabins.
How long before it exists only in our memories,
faded away, or worse, turned into another tourist trap.
This is the road out of Aspen to the East.
At the end of September, it was just before it was closed for the winter.

Below, you see trees coming out of the San Juan Skyway drive.

This is the rainbow from McClure Pass.
This is a story I will tell one day, when I find other pictures to scan in.

So many things there are like here, in wonderful Arizona.
