New Power Lines

See our blog for the Vultures!

Check out  http://www.nlper999.net/blog/  for more info on the power poles.  Look for September 12, 2006.

New power poles all along our alley, which runs between Magma and Kellner.

This has been a work in progress for a few months.

Live wire work

Here are the power guys, transferring the hot power lines from the spools on the old pole's wooden cross member to brackets on bright orange temporary arms.    Sword swallowing, snake handling and fire eating are jobs for sissies.  Grabbing a high voltage electrical line, now that's something not everyone has the courage to do.

Jim says anything orange is high voltage, the plastic casing along the line and the orange sheet are to keep these guys from accidentally bumping a second hot wire while they have their hands on one.   With the Devil Winds that can happen here, and the way the lines flap around, any protection is a good thing.

Hmmm,

Orange = hot?

... so if anything orange is high voltage, does this mean the guys in the orange shirts are the Hot Guys?  There must be women somewhere who would pay for that info...

Old & New Poles

The new metal poles are taller and stronger, as well as being impervious to the deterioration the wood poles  went through.

pulling lines

Today the truck drove up the alley, pulling new power cables.   These are bigger and thicker than the originals.  I hope this is because this whole adventure is to bring more power in to the mine.   People keep saying that the mine is not a done deal, but it sure looks like someone is making a huge investment, not something one would do on a risk. And the mine getting into business means jobs and new life for the town.

New Wires

Of course, as the truck had come up the alley, it had stopped at each pole, each of which had been left strung with yellow lines.  The power guys attached the new cable, and pulled through the brackets on the new pole.  But as they pulled the cables to the next pole, with the new poles being taller, they had to get the cables ABOVE the old wires, an the phone and cable lines.  This required a bit of finesse.

It was an amazingly coordinated group effort.

They did something different with the next pole up the alley, they went up in the bucket.  But I think they had to leave off working, as the Devil Winds came back.

We'll see what they do next.
